Digital «face transplant» for movies

26/12/2011

Special effects have already become an everyday reality of the movies world, so it came as no surprise when a Harvard programmer Kevin Dale created a digital "face transplant" system, which allows replacing an actor’s face with a 3D facial image of another person. In fact rather similar effects have already been used in such movies as "The Matrix", "Avatar" and even "The Social Network", where the roles of twins were played by unrelated actors who on the screen appear to have virtually the same face.

However due to a very high cost of professional technologies their use is limited to large studios, while the program developed by Kevin Dale, though definitely not as sophisticated (it has a number of notable sight defects, such as a visible seam in place where images overlay) is affordable and easy to use. As such it is perfect for home video, low budget films or those who create videos for youtube, because it requires only one camera, household lighting, a computer and a few simple manipulations on a computer.
